HOW TO STUDY

·      Use information provided by your teacher as well as your work in your visual journal.

·      Study for shorter periods over more days rather than “cramming” a large amount of study time into a day or two.  Break down  information into smaller pieces that can be reviewed a little each day.

·      Take breaks while studying.  Many students find that they need a break after 30 minutes of studying.  You can study up to 50 minutes at a time but longer than that without a break is not recommended, as overstimulating the brain with too much information actually slows down memory.

·      Review material actively rather than passively.
o   Place the material you are studying in front of you.  Then, on another piece of paper, extract and record key ideas and information.  You can make diagrams, or write jot notes.

o   Consider studying with a friend or two, or a parent.  Discussing key points s is another way to “actively encode” material.

o   As the test approaches, you can  make flashcards for any definitions or information that you are unsure of.

o   As a final review, condense all study information onto one page! (you can use both sides if you really need to.)  This will encourage you to weed out information you don’t need and you will also have a portable study sheet. J
