Understanding Math Concepts
Which numbers can be represented with rectangles? |
In Grade 6 math we are investigating relationships among concepts
related to factors and multiples. In order to create effective mathematics instruction,
teachers need to ensure learning is based on concepts and students are given
time to practice the skills in a purposeful way. Uncovering the
relationship among concepts produces learning that can transfer to new
situations and helps students unlock novel problems.
In the above photo you can see student work related to the concepts of multiplication and factors - an example of a task that communicates the representation of factors to students. Learning mathematics with understanding is essential. Analyzing students’ work is also important. It involves looking for evidence of understanding and misconceptions in the products they produce and in their explanations of their work.
